Meta Platforms, Inc. is an American technology company headquartered in Menlo Park, California, founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with fellow Harvard students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes as Facebook, a social networking website that began as a Harvard-only service before opening to the public. It grew into one of the largest social media and digital advertising companies in the world, expanding through the acquisitions of Instagram in 2012 and WhatsApp in 2014, and renamed itself Meta Platforms in 2021 to reflect a strategic push into virtual and augmented reality platforms it calls the metaverse.
