Facebook is a social networking service launched by Mark Zuckerberg and fellow Harvard University students in February 2004, initially restricted to college students before opening to the general public in 2006. It became the world's largest social network by users, was the founding product of the company later renamed Meta Platforms, and its advertising business, built on detailed user data and a public news feed, reshaped digital advertising, media distribution and political communication worldwide.
