WhatsApp is a cross-platform instant messaging and voice-calling service founded by Brian Acton and Jan Koum, launched in 2009 and acquired by Facebook in 2014 for approximately $19 billion, one of the largest technology acquisitions at the time. It became the most widely used messaging app in much of the world outside the United States and China, notable for adopting end-to-end encryption by default for its messages and calls.
