PlayStation is Sony's line of video game consoles, launched in Japan in December 1994 as Sony's entry into a market previously dominated by Nintendo and Sega. It became the first video game console to ship over 100 million units, and successive generations, the PlayStation 2 (2000), PlayStation 3 (2006), PlayStation 4 (2013) and PlayStation 5 (2020), have made the franchise one of the two dominant home console platforms alongside Microsoft's Xbox, with the PlayStation 2 remaining the best-selling video game console of all time.
