Air Jordan is a line of basketball shoes and associated apparel created by Nike for basketball player Michael Jordan, launched in 1985 with the original Air Jordan I. It became one of the most commercially significant athletic-shoe product lines in history, credited with pioneering athlete-branded signature sneaker deals as a major marketing strategy, spawning a large collector and resale ("sneakerhead") market, and eventually its own standalone Jordan Brand subsidiary within Nike.
