The iPod is a line of portable digital music players introduced by Apple Inc. in October 2001, paired from 2003 with the iTunes Store's legal paid-download model. It transformed the portable music player market previously dominated by cassette and CD players and early MP3 players, at its commercial peak in the mid-2000s selling hundreds of millions of units, before smartphones, above all Apple's own iPhone, absorbed its function and Apple discontinued the last iPod model, the iPod Touch, in 2022.
