The American Express Card is a charge and credit card product launched by the American Express Company in 1958, building on the firm's earlier travelers cheque business, distinguished from the Visa and Mastercard networks by American Express both issuing the card and operating its own closed-loop payment network directly. Its cards, particularly premium products such as the Gold Card and the invitation-only Centurion ("Black") Card, became strongly associated with an affluent, travel-oriented customer base and cardholder rewards and perks.
