American Express Company is an American financial services company headquartered in New York City, founded in 1850 as an express mail and freight-forwarding business by Henry Wells, William Fargo and John Butterfield. It moved into financial services in the late nineteenth century with money orders and traveler's cheques, and became known globally for its charge and credit cards under the American Express, or "Amex," brand, operating its own card network rather than issuing solely through third-party banks.
