Epic Games, Inc. is an American video game and software developer and publisher headquartered in Cary, North Carolina, founded by Tim Sweeney in 1991 as Potomac Computer Systems before being renamed Epic MegaGames and later Epic Games. The company created the widely licensed Unreal Engine and its own Gears of War and Unreal Tournament franchises, but its most commercially significant release has been Fortnite, launched in 2017, whose free-to-play Battle Royale mode became a global cultural phenomenon. Epic also operates the Epic Games Store, a digital distribution platform launched in 2018 as a competitor to Valve's Steam, and it pursued a high-profile antitrust lawsuit against Apple and Google over their mobile app store practices.
