The Volkswagen Beetle is a rear-engined economy car produced by Volkswagen from 1938 to 2003 with relatively few fundamental design changes, originally developed in 1930s Germany as a low-cost "people's car." It became one of the best-selling automobile models of all time, over roughly 21.5 million units produced across its original run, and was central to Volkswagen's post-war global growth before a modern, front-engined "New Beetle" revival was sold from 1997 to 2019.
