Visa is a global electronic payment-card network that traces its origin to BankAmericard, a credit card program launched by Bank of America in 1958 and later spun off and renamed Visa in 1976. Rather than issuing cards or extending credit itself, Visa operates the network that routes and settles transactions between the banks that do, and it became one of the two dominant payment-card networks in the world alongside Mastercard, processing a very large share of global card-based retail spending.
