TikTok is a short-form video-sharing service operated by the Chinese company ByteDance, launched internationally in 2017 after merging with the app Musical.ly, which it had acquired. Built around an algorithmically curated "For You" video feed, it became one of the most downloaded and used apps in the world among younger audiences in particular, and it has drawn sustained regulatory and national-security scrutiny in the United States and elsewhere over its Chinese ownership and data practices.
