Spotify is an audio streaming service co-founded by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon in Sweden, launched in 2008 with a licensed, ad-supported and paid-subscription catalog of music offered as an alternative to the music piracy widespread at the time. It became the world's largest music streaming service by subscribers, later expanding heavily into podcast hosting and distribution, and its per-stream royalty payment model has been a persistent point of contention with recording artists and labels.
