Snapchat is a multimedia messaging service launched in 2011 by Stanford students Evan Spiegel, Bobby Murphy and Reggie Brown, notable at launch for messages that automatically disappeared after being viewed. It popularized the disappearing-message format and the Story format (a rolling 24-hour feed of a user's posts), both of which were widely copied by rival platforms including Instagram, and it remains especially popular among younger users.
