Slack is a business messaging and collaboration platform launched in 2013 by Stewart Butterfield and colleagues, built from communication tools originally developed for an unsuccessful video game project. Organized around topic- and team-based channels rather than individual email threads, it became a widely adopted alternative to email for internal workplace communication, was acquired by Salesforce in 2021, and helped popularize the broader category of persistent team-chat software that rivals including Microsoft Teams later contested.
