Netflix is a subscription video streaming service founded by Reed Hastings and Marc Randolph in 1997, originally as a DVD-by-mail rental business, before launching streaming video in 2007 and its first original scripted series, House of Cards, in 2013. It became the largest paid video streaming service in the world by subscribers, and its early and aggressive pivot into producing original film and television content reshaped how much of the television and film industry commissions, releases and competes for audiences.
