Microsoft Windows is a family of graphical operating systems first released by Microsoft in November 1985 as an add-on to MS-DOS, becoming a standalone dominant operating system through Windows 3.0 (1990), Windows 95 and successive versions to today's Windows 11. For most of the personal-computer era it has run on the large majority of desktop and laptop computers worldwide, making it one of the most commercially significant software products ever created and a central pillar of Microsoft's business.
