Levi's 501 is a style of denim jeans made by Levi Strauss & Co., tracing to the copper-riveted "waist overalls" patented by Jacob Davis and Levi Strauss in 1873 for durable workwear, with the 501 lot number itself in use since the 1890s. Widely regarded as the original blue jean and the archetype the entire denim-jeans category descends from, it evolved over the 20th century from workwear into a mainstream and later fashion garment worn worldwide, and it remains one of the most recognized clothing products in history.
