Kleenex is a brand of disposable facial tissue launched by Kimberly-Clark in 1924, originally marketed as a cold-cream and makeup remover before consumer feedback led the company to reposition it as a disposable handkerchief for colds and allergies. It became so dominant in its category that "Kleenex" is widely used as a generic term for facial tissue in general, a phenomenon known as genericization, in much the same way as Xerox and Band-Aid.
