IBM Watson is a computer system built to answer questions posed in natural language, developed through IBM's DeepQA project and named after IBM founder Thomas J. Watson, with David Ferrucci as principal investigator. It was created to compete on the quiz show Jeopardy, and in 2011 it defeated champions Brad Rutter and Ken Jennings to win a 1 million dollar first place prize. IBM later extended Watson into commercial fields including healthcare, retail, cooking, weather forecasting, and education, but most of these applications were discontinued, and in 2022 IBM sold its Watson Health division to Francisco Partners for 1 billion dollars after having spent about 4 billion dollars developing it.
