GitHub is a web-based hosting and collaboration service for software source code, built around the Git version-control system and launched in 2008 by Tom Preston-Werner, Chris Wanstrath, PJ Hyett and Scott Chacon. It became the world's largest host of software source code and the default social and collaborative platform for open-source development, was acquired by Microsoft in 2018, and later launched GitHub Copilot, one of the first widely used AI coding-assistant products built on large language models.
