Gatorade is a brand of sports drinks owned and manufactured by PepsiCo and distributed in more than 80 countries. A team of researchers at the University of Florida led by Robert Cade developed the beverage in 1965 for the school's student athletes, the Gators, to replenish carbohydrates and the water and electrolytes lost through sweat during vigorous activity. Stokely Van Camp acquired the rights to produce and market Gatorade in 1965, was itself purchased by the Quaker Oats Company in 1983, and Quaker Oats was in turn bought by PepsiCo in 2001.
