eBay is an online auction and shopping marketplace founded by Pierre Omidyar in September 1995 under the name AuctionWeb, one of the earliest and most influential consumer-to-consumer e-commerce platforms. Its person-to-person auction model, later supplemented by fixed-price listings, helped establish online secondhand and collectibles trading as a mainstream retail category, and its PayPal payment subsidiary, spun off in 2015, became one of the dominant online payment services in its own right.
