The Boeing 747 is a long range wide body airliner that Boeing Commercial Airplanes designed and manufactured in the United States between 1968 and 2023. It was conceived in response to Pan Am's demand for a jet two and a half times the size of the 707 in order to cut the airline's seat costs by 30 percent, with the design team led by Joe Sutter. Pan Am ordered 25 Boeing 747-100 aircraft in April 1966, the first 747 rolled out of the purpose built Everett plant in September 1968, its first flight took place in February 1969, and it entered service with Pan Am on January 22, 1970 as the first airplane called a jumbo jet and the first wide body airliner.
