The Big Mac is a hamburger sold by McDonald's, created by franchisee Jim Delligatti in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and introduced regionally in 1967 before going nationwide across the United States in 1968. Its two beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles and onions on a three-part sesame-seed bun became one of the most recognized fast-food products in the world, and its consistent global pricing gave rise to The Economist magazine's "Big Mac Index," an informal measure of currency purchasing-power comparison used since 1986.
