Android is a mobile operating system based on a modified version of the Linux kernel, originally developed by Android Inc. and acquired by Google in 2005, with the first commercial Android phone shipping in 2008. Licensed by Google to many device manufacturers, it became the most widely used mobile operating system in the world by installed base, powering the large majority of smartphones sold globally and underpinning Google's mobile advertising and app-store (Google Play) businesses.
