Airbnb is an online marketplace for short-term lodging and experiences, founded by Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia and Nathan Blecharczyk in 2008 after the founders rented air mattresses in their San Francisco apartment to conference attendees. It pioneered the mainstream peer-to-peer home-sharing model as an alternative to traditional hotels, grew into one of the largest lodging marketplaces in the world by listings, went public in 2020, and has prompted significant housing-policy debate and regulation in many cities over its effect on long-term rental availability.
