Lean manufacturing is a management system built on the principle of producing only what is needed, when it is needed, correcting abnormalities as soon as they occur, and empowering workers to improve their own processes. It grew out of Toyota's postwar manufacturing redesign led by Taiichi Ohno and Shigeo Shingo, building on the teachings of W. Edwards Deming, and became known in the West as the Toyota Production System. The term Lean itself was coined later, in 1988, by the American researcher John Krafcik.
