The palm oil industry produces and trades palm oil, an edible vegetable oil derived from the reddish pulp of the fruit of the African oil palm. The oil is used in food manufacturing, in cosmetics and beauty products, and as a biofuel, and it accounted for about 36 percent of all oils produced from oil crops worldwide in 2017, making it the most produced vegetable oil by volume. Its cultivation and processing are also associated with major environmental and social controversies, particularly deforestation in producing regions.
