In 2019 a federal judge ruled against the chipmaker Qualcomm in a case brought by the United States Federal Trade Commission, finding that Qualcomm's patent licensing practices toward smartphone makers were anticompetitive. The ruling was later overturned on appeal, but the case drew wide attention to the licensing practices that underpin the mobile chip industry.
