In 2017 the European Commission fined Google a record sum, later reported at roughly 2.4 billion euros, after finding that the company had abused its dominant position in general internet search to favor its own Google Shopping comparison service over rival services. Google appealed the decision, and the case became a landmark example of European antitrust enforcement against a major American technology company.
