In December 1998, Exxon and Mobil announced an agreement to merge, and the deal closed on November 30, 1999, forming ExxonMobil in what was then the largest corporate merger in history at roughly eighty-one billion dollars. Both companies descended from Standard Oil, which the U.S. Supreme Court had broken into 39 independent firms in 1911, so the merger reunited two of Standard Oil's largest successors eighty-eight years after the breakup.
