In 2015 eBay spun off the online payments service PayPal into an independent publicly traded company, more than a decade after eBay had originally acquired PayPal in 2002. The separation followed pressure from activist investors including Carl Icahn, who argued that PayPal's fast growing payments business was worth more as a standalone company than as a division of eBay's online marketplace.
