German pharmaceutical and chemical giant Bayer completed its 63 billion dollar acquisition of American agrochemical and seed company Monsanto in June 2018, creating the world's largest supplier of seeds and pesticides. The deal, retiring the controversial Monsanto name, saddled Bayer with tens of billions of dollars in liabilities from tens of thousands of lawsuits alleging Monsanto's Roundup weedkiller causes cancer, badly damaging Bayer's share price for years afterward.
