Woolworths Holdings Limited is a South African multinational retail company headquartered in Cape Town, founded in 1931 by Max Sonnenberg and his son Richard, and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange under the ticker WHL. Entirely separate from the unrelated Australian Woolworths Group, the South African company sells groceries, clothing, homeware, financial services, and cosmetics, and as of 2026 operated 1,669 locations, about 62 percent of them in South Africa with the remainder across Africa and Australasia, employing roughly 32,000 people and reporting revenue of R82.77 billion for its 2026 financial year. Its divisions include Woolworths Food stores, the WCafe coffee chain, Absolute Pets, and Woolworths Financial Services; the group acquired the Australian retailer Country Road in 1998 and previously owned David Jones, sold in 2023.
