Western Digital Corporation is an American technology company headquartered in San Jose, California, and one of the world's largest manufacturers of computer data storage devices, principally hard disk drives. It was founded on April 23, 1970, by Alvin B. Phillips, a former Motorola employee, as General Digital Corporation, an early manufacturer of semiconductor test equipment in Newport Beach, California, before adopting the Western Digital name and moving into storage technology. The company grew into a major supplier of hard disk drives and, later, solid-state and flash storage products for personal computers, enterprise data centers, surveillance systems, gaming consoles, and network-attached storage devices. Western Digital relocated its headquarters to San Jose in 2017 after decades based in Orange County, California.
