Union Minera del Norte, S.A. (UMINSA) was Spain leading coal mining company, formed in March 1998 when the company CARLENOR changed its name to UMINSA. Headquartered in Madrid and owned by businessman Victorino Alonso of Leon, the company extracted anthracite and hard coal from mining properties across the Spanish provinces of Leon, Palencia, and Asturias, producing more than 2 million tons of coal a year and employing about 1,500 workers at its peak. UMINSA entered liquidation in 2018.
