Under Armour, Inc. is an American sports apparel and footwear company headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland. It was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a former special teams captain on the University of Maryland football team, who developed a moisture-wicking compression T-shirt intended to be worn under a football jersey in place of the sweat-absorbing cotton shirts athletes typically wore at the time. Plank began selling the shirts out of the trunk of his car to college and professional teams, and Under Armour grew from that original compression garment into a broader athletic apparel, footwear, and accessories business that competes with larger established sportswear makers.
