Toronto-Dominion Bank, operating as TD Bank Group, is a Canadian multinational bank headquartered in Toronto, one of the largest banks in Canada. It was formed in 1955 through the merger of the Bank of Toronto, founded in 1855, and the Dominion Bank, founded in 1869, two established Canadian chartered banks that combined to compete more effectively with larger domestic rivals. TD Bank Group operates as one of Canada's so-called Big Five banks domestically, and it also built a substantial retail banking presence along the East Coast of the United States under the TD Bank, N.A. brand, giving it an unusually large American retail footprint compared with most other Canadian banks.
