Telefonica, S.A. is a Spanish multinational telecommunications company headquartered in Madrid, founded in 1924 as Compania Telefonica Nacional de Espana with early involvement from the American firm ITT, and later fully nationalized before being progressively privatized by the Spanish government through the 1990s. It provides fixed, mobile and broadband services in Spain under the Movistar brand and O2 in parts of Europe, and it built a large presence across Latin America through decades of acquisitions following the region's telecom privatizations.
