Telecom Italia S.p.A., which trades under the TIM brand, is Italy's largest telecommunications operator, headquartered in Rome with major operations also based in Milan. The company was formed in the 1990s through the merger and privatization of Italy's formerly state-owned telephone companies, and it has since gone through a series of ownership changes involving Italian and foreign investors including Telefonica and, more recently, the French investment group Vivendi. Telecom Italia operates Italy's largest fixed-line and mobile networks and has historically also held a significant Latin American mobile business in Brazil (TIM Brasil), while its Italian fixed-line network infrastructure has been the subject of a major restructuring effort aimed at separating network assets from retail services.
