Syfy is a pay television channel brand owned and operated by NBCUniversal International Networks, broadcasting in-house and acquired science fiction, fantasy, horror, supernatural and paranormal programming outside the United States. Its original American channel launched as the Sci-Fi Channel on September 24, 1992, and international versions followed three years later, beginning with the United Kingdom and Ireland in October 1995 and the Netherlands and Belgium in 1996. The brand was renamed Syfy on July 7, 2009, and most international channels were rebranded Syfy Universal in the early 2010s before the Universal suffix was dropped by 2017; in Poland and Romania the name stayed Sci Fi Universal because syfy carries profane connotations in Polish. The brand now operates through regional variants across Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia and the Middle East.
