Swisscom AG is Switzerland's largest telecommunications provider, headquartered in the Bern area (Worblaufen/Ittigen), and is majority owned by the Swiss Confederation, which retains a controlling stake reflecting the company's roots as the telecommunications division of the former state PTT postal and telecom authority. Swisscom was spun out as an independent, part-privatized corporation in 1998 and today provides fixed-line, mobile, broadband internet and digital television services across Switzerland, consistently ranking among the countries with the fastest and most extensively deployed fibre and mobile networks in Europe. It also owns Fastweb, a major fixed and mobile broadband operator in Italy, giving Swisscom a significant cross-border presence beyond its domestic Swiss market.
