Suntory is a Japanese beverage and spirits company headquartered in Osaka, founded in 1899 by Shinjiro Torii as a shop selling imported wine. Torii went on to build Japan's first whisky distillery at Yamazaki in 1923, launching the country's domestic whisky industry, and Suntory whisky brands remain internationally recognized today. The company, operated under the holding company Suntory Holdings, has since grown into a broad beverage group spanning whisky, beer, soft drinks and bottled water, and it expanded into the American market with its 2014 acquisition of the spirits maker Beam Inc., forming Beam Suntory.
