Suncor Energy Inc. is a Canadian integrated energy company headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, and a pioneer of Canadian oil sands development. Its origins trace to Sun Oil Company's Canadian operations, which began commercial extraction from the Athabasca oil sands in 1967 under the name Great Canadian Oil Sands, one of the first large-scale oil sands mining operations in the world; the company adopted the Suncor name in 1979. Suncor's operations span oil sands mining and upgrading, offshore production, refining and a large Canadian retail fuel network under the Petro-Canada brand. It is one of Canada's largest energy companies and a major supplier of refined petroleum products across Canada.
