Stella Artois is a pilsner style beer first brewed in 1926 by Brouwerij Artois in Leuven, Belgium, a brewery whose own predecessor, the Den Hoorn brewery, is recorded in Leuven since at least 1366. Created under a code name in October 1925, it launched the following January as a Christmas beer named for the Christmas star, with an original strength of 5.2 percent alcohol by volume, though reduced strength versions are sold in some markets today. Stella Artois is now owned by Anheuser Busch InBev, described as the worlds largest brewer, through its subsidiary Interbrew International, and is sold globally as one of that companys flagship brands.
