Sonic Drive-In is an American drive-in fast food chain founded by Troy N. Smith Sr. in Shawnee, Oklahoma in 1953 under the original name Top Hat Drive-In, known for carhop service delivered in part by employees on roller skates. Headquartered in Oklahoma City, the chain serves a menu built around items such as chili cheese coneys, cheeseburger combos and frozen Sonic Blast desserts, and it operates more than 3,400 locations. Sonic has been owned by Inspire Brands since a 2.3 billion dollar acquisition completed in December 2018.
