Sonae is a multinational business group headquartered in Maia, Portugal, established in 1959 by the entrepreneur and banker Afonso Pinto de Magalhaes. Operating in 90 countries, the group's businesses span retail in food, electronics and fashion, real estate, media and telecommunications, technology investments and financial services; its MC division runs hypermarkets and supermarkets, Worten operates consumer electronics retail, Zeitreel runs fashion and apparel brands, Universo provides financial services, Sonae Sierra manages real estate, and the group holds a significant stake in the telecommunications company NOS. Sonae describes itself as the largest private employer in Portugal.
