Societe Generale S.A. is a French multinational bank headquartered in Paris, founded in 1864 by imperial decree of Napoleon III to promote the development of trade and industry in France through commercial credit. It is one of France's largest banks and among the oldest banking groups in continental Europe still operating under its founding name. Societe Generale provides retail banking, corporate and investment banking, asset management, and insurance services across dozens of countries, and it is classified as a globally systemically important bank by international regulators.
