Smith & Nephew plc is a British multinational medical technology company headquartered in Watford, England, that manufactures orthopedic reconstruction implants, wound care products, and sports medicine equipment. It was founded in 1856 by Thomas James Smith as a pharmacy in Hull, England, and took its present name after his nephew, Horatio Nelson Smith, joined and eventually took over the business in the late nineteenth century. Smith & Nephew grew through the twentieth century from wound dressings into a diversified medical device company, and it trades on the London Stock Exchange as a component of the FTSE 100 index.
